About Us

The Crawford County Federated Library System was established in 1978, unifying all county libraries under one organisation and making better use of resources. CCFLS is comprised of nine Crawford County libraries and enables all citizens of Crawford County to use any library in the county.

Our libraries are committed to providing free and open access to educational, recreational and cultural resources for library users of all ages and backgrounds. Each library offers free public computing and WiFi, and there are many educational resources and programs at each of the nine libraries within our library system.

Short History of the Libraries

Benson Memorial Library (Titusville)
Background: Benson Memorial Library in Titusville finds its origins in the Titusville Library Association, founded in 1877. In 1902, the children of Tidewater Pipe Company President Byron D. Benson proposed the creation of a public library in memory of their parents as a gift to the people of Titusville. Benson Memorial Library was accepted by popular vote and opened two years later in February 1904. The library almost doubled in size during a 1977 expansion project and joined the Crawford County Federated Library System at its founding in 1978.

Known For: Benson is known for its expansive local history and artifact collection spanning the history of Titusville. Hosting rare documents of all kinds, Titusville history can be explored through newspapers, yearbooks, birth and death records, cemetery records, and city directories encompassing more than 150 years of history. Free access to databases like Ancestry, HeritageQuest, Fold3, and NewspaperArchive are provided with your library card.

───

Cambridge Springs Public Library
Background: The Cambridge Springs Public Library was incorporated in 1928 with 1574 books and 336 registered borrowers. In 1976 a groundswell of community support paved, and paid, the way to move the library from a room in the city hall building to its own building and present location.

Known For: Cambridge Springs Public Library offers all the great library services people know and love in addition to offering a community room available for public use. You can even host your child's next birthday party there, and for a small fee, have a story hour and craft provided by the library!

───

Cochranton Area Public Library
Background: Cochranton Area Public Library opened on August 1, 1969 in two rooms of an old house that had been part of the former Cochranton High School cafeteria building. The house included an attached building that had been moved from Keystone Ordnance Works in 1946. Roof and foundation issues plagued the building over the years, and in 2014 a new library building was constructed on the same property.

Known For: CAPL has an active Friends of the Library group. In addition to the usual used book sales, one of the annual events they organize is the Garden Sale which takes place at the library during Cochranton Garage Sale Days (Memorial Day weekend).

───

Linesville Community Public Library
Background: Linesville Community Public Library first opened their doors to the public on December 20th, 1982. They quickly outgrew their shared space with the borough and were presented with the opportunity to move into the Unitarian Church in 1989.

Known For: Today, the library continues to reside in the old church with stained glass windows which makes the library unique. This unique feature brings a lot of new people that want to see and appreciate the old building for what it was and is now! LCPL continues to offer different and flexible programs and services to the Linesville community.

───

Margaret Shontz Memorial Library (Conneaut Lake)
Background: The Margaret Shontz Memorial Library was started in 1971 under the leadership of two determined women, Phyllis Martin and Kathryn Gates with funds donated in memory of Margaret McClintock Shontz, a devoted Conneaut Lake Sunday school teacher. With the generous support of community groups, area governing bodies and the American Legion Post 587, the Shontz Memorial Library gained a permanent home at 145 South 2nd Street in Conneaut Lake in 1978.

Known For: Patrons often comment on the good feeling they have when visiting the Shontz Library. We attribute that to the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere our space provides. A large, patron-made dollhouse was placed near the entrance many years ago, welcoming new and returning visitors from all generations to our library. We are proud to have served the area for over 50 years by providing books, reference materials, magazines, videos, WiFi, digital resources and classes in a comfortable, welcoming space to learn, explore and embrace the joy of reading.

───

Meadville Public Library
Background: The Meadville Public Library was founded in 1879 and moved into its current home next to Diamond Park in 1925. The building is notable for its iconic arched windows and expansive children's room. With collections spread across three floors, the library's top floor was recently renovated to provide additional meeting rooms and study space.

Known For: In addition to its many books, Meadville Public Library provides access to a collection of toys, games, tools, video equipment, makerspace and craft supplies, and hosts numerous community events throughout the year, including free tax preparation.

───

Saegertown Area Library
Background: Through the hard work of the Saegertown community, fundraisers, donations and businesses, the Saegertown Area Library was opened in August 1984. It moved across the street into a larger facility (formerly the Fire Department building) in 1999.

Known For: "Where everybody knows your name..." the Saegertown Area Library is a warm, cozy, hometown library where you will often be greeted by name. We strive to make you feel that while you browse for books, have a drink in our cafe or even use the computer, that you are in a magical place each time you come in.

───

Springboro Public Library
Background: Springboro Public Library was first set up in 1944 as a project sponsored by the Amicus Club, a local women’s organization. Soon after, the Library was given space in the corner of a town restaurant. On August 8th, 1944, the library became official with 216 books and 2 bookcases. Outgrowing spaces at the Variety Store and borough meeting rooms, the library found their current home in 1994 with the purchase of the former hardware store on Main Street. Extensive fundraising efforts, including sales of a cookbook filled with donated recipes from local citizens, allowed for renovations completed in 1998 to create the space the library lives in still today.

Known For: Springboro Public Library is a visual reminder of Springboro's amazing history. From portraits lining the tops of shelves showing the famous Shadeland Mansion or historic Main Street to the many shirts displayed in the front craft room depicting years of community events, Springboro Public Library strives every day to keep our local history alive in our cozy historic building. Visitors can enjoy newly restored original tin ceiling tiles and a full-size horse drawn sleigh built into one of the front windows.

───

Stone Memorial Library (Conneautville)
Background: Stone Memorial Library was founded in 1904 by Julia L. Stone in memory of her husband, James A. Stone, for whom the library is named. A "spirit painting" portrait of Mr. Stone continues to hang on the library walls to this day.

Known For: Stone Memorial Library is proud to continue to serve Conneautville and its surrounding townships, offering access to information, entertainment, and education through the town's many seasons over the past 119 years.
