Description
"Charlie Fish and Brenda Dubie meet and fall in love in Chicago in the autumn of 1943, when he stops into the music store where Brenda, an aspiring organist, works. Their lives are soon upended when Charlie, a brilliant Harvard-educated mathematician, is drafted into the top secret Manhattan Project. Working to build the atomic bomb with some of the age's greatest scientific minds, Charlie is assigned the task of designing its detonator. Aware of the murderous devastation the bomb will wreak, the deeply ethical mathematician begins to suffer a crisis of conscience. Brenda, unaware of the true nature of Charlie's duties, mistakes his qualms for self-doubt and urges him to be a man. As the war intensifies, so do the race to build the bomb and Charlie's internal conflict. When the bombs strike Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Charlie and Brenda feel an overwhelming sense of culpability. Whatever the justification for using the bomb may be, the young couple believe they have contributed to the deaths of multitudes. At the war's end, Charlie receives a scholarship to pursue a PhD in physics at Stanford -- an opportunity he and Brenda hope will allow them a fresh start. But the past proves inescapable. All that any of his new colleagues can talk about is the bomb and what greater atomic weapons might be on the horizon. Haunted by guilt, Charlie quits. He and Brenda dedicate the rest of their lives to making amends, seeking redemption together -- and they find it."--,Provided by publisher.
